The Referral Process
If it is determined intervention is recommended for a child, a prescription from the child’s primary care physician will be required. While our expert staff can initially examine and evaluate a child without a physician’s referral, in order to begin treatment a referral must be obtained. This practice insures that our team is informed of any provisions recommended by the child’s pediatrician, and keeps the pediatrician informed of the child’s development.

Our multi-disciplinary therapy team is committed to educating you and your child to gain and develop vital skills for improved coordination, communication and socialization. We believe family involvement in therapy is a critical piece to a successful plan of care. Learn more about the Mylestones Therapy staff!
When might a child need speech or language therapy?
Some children may experience delays in reaching major speech and language milestones, which may be normal or can indicate something more going on. Depending on your child’s specific needs, therapy activities using communication devices, sign language and/or picture communication strategies may be appropriate. Read more.

When might a child need pediatric occupational therapy?
A child who seems easily over-stimulated, struggles with coordination or visual processing, or demonstrates characteristics of Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder or dyspraxia, occupational therapy can be beneficial. Using a variety of techniques, our team will work with your child to reach appropriate milestones and provide you with the training you need to build on those skills at home. Our team specializes in treating pediatric speech and language disorders.
Mylestones Pediatric Therapy provides speech and language therapy for young children. Early intervention is a critical key to social, communicative, as well as educational success. Speech and language activities are used to build on a child’s current language skills. If a child has difficulty either understanding or expressing his or her needs (receptive and expressive language disorder), including articulation impairment, apraxia of speech, fluency disorder or pragmatic language – therapy designed to improve their communication skills may give that child the support he or she needs.
Is speech-language therapy right
for your child?
All children develop differently. Generally, by 18-24 months, your child should have approximately 50 words and you should be able to understand most of them. Young children typically use gestures along with vocalizations and may even “invent” some of their own words. As the body and the brain develop, some variation in how those words sound is expected. However, extensive research studies indicate that early intervention for speech-language delays greatly benefits development.

Speech and language games!
Each child will receive a treatment plan from our Speech-Language Pathologist addressing goals to improve his/her communication abilities. This may include various language activities and games, sign language and use of pictures and communication devices. The Speech-Language Pathology team is dedicated to helping families feel confident in reinforcing and maintaining new accomplishments.

Excellence is delivered at Mylestones Therapy!
Effective multi-discipline intervention programs most often begin in a highly structured therapy setting. A team approach includes both opportunities for co-treatment sessions, as well as active and functional family participation. Through parent and/or caregiver education and training, the skills the child learns in therapy can be easily incorporated in the child’s natural environment.
What makes Mylestones Pediatric Therapy different?
At Mylestones Pediatric Therapy, we believe in a “whole-child” approach to therapy. A child’s development is often impacted by many factors, from neurological development and functional language opportunities, to nutrition and parent/caregiver education. Our focus will be collaboration with family members and professionals working with your child, as well as assisting in identifying community resources to support your child’s progress.

Our occupational therapy team treats various pediatric exceptionalities!
For adults, an occupation is work. A child’s occupation is learning, most often through play. Children learn best when an activity is fun and engaging. Whether a child presents with a sensory processing disorder, discoordination, difficulty maintaining attention or making social connections, therapy will address optimizing overall function in daily life in a way that instills a desire for life-long learning and vigor for independence.
Our kid-friendly gym invites participation!
Our kid-friendly therapy gym is designed to provide kinesthetic and proprioceptive input (joint movement and body awareness) and vestibular stimulation to enhance balance and overall safety. Gym equipment includes tools that provide opportunities for jumping, sliding, tumbling, balancing, crawling, running, climbing and maneuvering, combined with problem-solving skills. The Pediatric Occupational Therapy team will also target table-top, pre-academic activities to improve grasp efficiency, fine motor proficiency, hand-eye coordination, and techniques to improve social skills and academic preparedness.
Evaluation and Treatment Process
An evaluation with Mylestones Pediatric Therapy may consist of a review of medical reports, family and/or caregiver interview, collaboration with physicians, counselors, and educators, observation, and formal testing. Results are combined and used to develop an individualized plan with both long term and short term goals. We encourage parents to be a part of every step in their child’s therapy plan, so while their child is in a session, through one-way windows located in the central and gym areas, parents/caregivers may observe modeled techniques without disrupting the session. They will have opportunities to ask questions and demonstrate learned strategies with the child and therapist, once a skill has been introduced.
